Langkawi Islands
The Langkawi Islands archipelago consist of 99 islands. The fact is that most of the islands are deserted with no human settlement except for the Langkawi island and the Pulau Tuba Island. Of these two islands Langkawi is the one that has developed in leaps and bounds, the Pulau Tuba island is not developed to that extent. However, there are a few places to stay in the Pulau Tuba island.
The development of the Langkawi island is phenomenal. The impetus on tourism has been huge and there has been a number of tourism related initiatives taken by the Government. The Malaysian Government has been really successful in reaching Langkawi to the homes of the European and American tourist. There are a number of swanky up market hotels and service apartments. Resorts too form an important part of the Langkawi hotel and hospitality industry.
Pulau Tuba the only other inhabited island in the archipelago however is not so well developed. There are a few chattels that provide food and lodging facilities at price ranges between RM 30 to RM 75 per day which includes three meals and staying expenses. The Sunrise Beach Resort, is doing well since it has no competition around.
The Pulau Dayang Bunting is another island in the archipelago. This is the second largest of the islands in the archipelago. Named after a lake in the island, which people believe possesses magical powers to cure infertility in women. There is no scientific proof behind all this, but apart from a variety of species of birds there is practically no other living being on the island.
The other islands that are visited by tourists in their itinerary of conducted tours by tour operators include Pulau Rebak, Pulau Payar, Pulau Singa Besar, Pulau Bumbon to name just a few. The Pulau Payar island has a marine park as well for some of the exotic species of marine life. The island is a favourite for hikers and adventure sports participants and is connected to Langkawi with an efficient catamaran service.
Another uninhabited island is the Pulau Singa Besar. The locals say that if correctly translated the islands name would mean the ‘Island of the big lion’ though there is no concrete evidence of this. The island is rich with the flora and fauna of the archipelago. The living species are generally the lizard, the mouse deer, macaques and the hornbills.
Pulau Bumbon is one more of the deserted islands of the group. The island is easily accessible through a boat ride from the main Langkawi. A day trip costs around RM 30 but if you decide to stay for the night at your own risk. The beauty of the Pulau Bumbon island is in the clear water and the fresh air that keeps the island as good as new.
You may log on to the internet to find out the details of the other islands. Most of the islands provide for the way you can spend a holiday but prohibits staying back for the night.
