Langkawi Holidays
Close to the Indian subcontinent, on the northern tip of Malaysia is Langkawi. This is said to be an archipelago of 99 small islands. It is believed that there are five smaller islands that show up on low tide. The northwestern tip of Malaysia closer to the border of Thailand, houses this beautiful archipelago. The name of Langkawi was recently given to the islands by the Sultan of Kedah in the year 2008 in commemoration of his Golden Jubilee celebrations. Langkawi refers to a reddish brown eagle, which is the icon on which the islands have been named.
The islands are mostly uninhabited except for the bigger island of Pulah Langkawi, which is home to the entire population of around 64000 people. Kuah is the principal town with administrative headquarters situated in this town. Langkawi is a duty free island.
